Snowmobiling in Vermont



Vermont is one of the most popular states where snowmobilers have gone to experience the thrill and excitement of the winter season. The consistently snowy conditions and cold weather make Vermont ideal for snowmobiling. However, snow's not everything making snowmobiling in Vermont ideal. Vermont also boasts over 5,000 miles of groomed and well-maintained VAST trails to fit the varied needs and abilities of snowmobilers.

The resorts in Vermont have several options and services available to make Vermont snowmobiling vacations even better. For the more adventurous snowmobiler, there are day trips that consist of over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile tracks. With convenient fuel stops and restaurants along the way, snowmobilers can cross the white-covered New England countryside over a span of one-day or several days.

Several of the more popular areas in Vermont for snowmobilers include Stowe, Killington and Woodford, known for great scenery as well as wonderful trail systems. For those of you who wish guided tours, you have many choices of tour companies in these areas:

The Sterling Ridge Inn
Jeffersonville, VT

In the vicinity of Stowe is Jeffersonville, home of The Sterling Ridge Inn, which provides customized one- and two-hour day tours which leave Sterling Ridge, traveling through wooded trails and open fields. They also provide 1-hour nighttime snowmobile tours from 5PM to 8PM.

As of this writing the cost is $85 per snowmobile. The tours are reservation-only. In addition to snowmobiling, they offer cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding in the winter.

Snowmobiling Regulations in Vermont

In order to ride on the VAST maintained trail system in Vermont, your snowmobile must be legally registered in Vermont or any other state or province and you must purchase a TMA (Trail Maintenance Assessment / Trail Pass) from a VAST member snowmobile club. In addition, anyone born after July 1, 1983, and who is 12 years of age and older, must complete a six-hour Snowmobile Safety Course recognized by Vermont.
